London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its square-mile medieval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century the name London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area,[ governed by the elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence It is the world's largest financial centre alongside New York and has the largest city GDP in Europe It has the most international visitors of any city in the world and London Heathrow is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers. London's 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education institutions in Europe.In 2012 London will become the first city to host the modern Summer Olympic Games three times.
London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries.[ In July 2010 Greater London had an official population of 7,825,200, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union] The Greater London Urban Area is the second largest in the EU with a population of 8,278,251,[ while London'smetropolitan area is the largest in the EU with an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. London had the largest population of any city in the world from around 1831 to 1925.

London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow , in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the fourth busiest airport in the world (as of 2011) in terms of total passenger traffic, handling more international passengers than any other airport around the globe.It is also the busiest airport in the EU by passenger traffic and the third busiest in Europe given the number of traffic movements, with a figure surpassed only by Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport and Frankfurt Airport.
The airport is owned and operated by BAA Limited, who also own and operate five other UK airports. BAA is owned by ADI Limited, an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group, which also includes Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and GIC Special Investments. Heathrow is a primary hub for BMI and British Airways as well as a base for Virgin Atlantic Airways.
















                                
                                              LONDON UNDERGROUND





The London Underground (also known as the Tube or The Underground) is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and some parts of BuckinghamshireEssex and Hertfordshire in England. It is the oldest underground railway in the world, the first section of which opened in 1863 on what are now the CircleHammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. In 1890 it became the first to operate electric trains.The whole network is commonly referred to by Londoners and in official publicity as the Tube,although that term originally applied only to the deep-level bored lines, along which run trains of a smaller and more circular cross-section, to distinguish them from the sub-surface "cut and cover" lines that were built first.

Madame Tussauds  the family themselves pronounce it  is a wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities. It was founded by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud and was formerly known as "Madame Tussaud's", but the apostrophe is no longer used (though it still appears in some signage at the New York location).Madame Tussauds is a major tourist attraction in London, displaying waxworks of historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars and famous murderers.
